In this iteration of treeschool_, several Dutch Elm Disease resistant cultivars are growing in seedling pots made from the pulped swarf of the 120-year-old wild type American elm that was felled in 2024. The lignin in the wood has been broken down in imitation of natural 'nurse logs' - micro-habitat nurseries created by the decomposing body of a parent tree. treeschool_ takes its name from the German word for a plant nursery, as the first iteration of this piece brought seedlings of 'working' tree species to the exotic specimen-studded grounds of an Austrian arts institution funded by agroforestry.
